Reliance Medical Practice in Wyong opening May

Putting patients back in the driving seat on the Coast

After years of suffering through a GP shortage with many practices closing their books to new patients, the Central Coast is now climbing ahead of Sydney on the doctor to patient ratio, with an influx of quality doctors set to enter the new Reliance Medical Practice in Wyong opening May 9th.

Reliance GP Super Clinic located at West Gosford will open a second Reliance Medical Practice in Wyong (Unit 9c, 1-10 Amy Close) in May this year. Owner and Medical Director, Dr. Rodney Beckwith says “Due to the number of patients coming to our West Gosford Super Clinic from the northern part of the Central Coast it has been apparent there is a need for more general practice services.”

Currently there are 330,000 residents on the Central Coast, with approximately 357 GPs but many of the more established doctors have closed their books to new patients.

Over 70% of the Wyong population is comprised of families, with seniors over 60 making up another 25%. Reliance Medical Practice CEO, Julie Abdilla states “looking at the age demographics of Wyong Shire, there are a large number of young families and seniors, which highlights the level of demand for health services in particular general practice’’ Abdilla also says that “on the supply side, we have the aging workforce with around 44 per cent of GPs practising on the Central Coast aged 55 and over which could mean a significant number of GPs in the area retiring in the next few years, Reliance Medical Practice has a fresh stable of high quality doctors ready to serve the Wyong community.”

Many practices on the Central Coast have recently shifted to be predominantly private billed, but Abdilla reassures “patients can expect a largely bulk-billing clinic, modern, by appointment, with high levels of service. This will be complimented by the West Gosford Super Clinic services open 7 days, 365 days a year.”

The doctor to patient ratio on the Central Coast has improved over the last five years with the establishment of new clinics such as Reliance GP Super Clinic in West Gosford, which employs over 20 GPs, and up to an additional 17 lined up for the new Wyong practice. The new numbers will see an improvement on the Central Coast shifting to 1 GP for approximately 900 patients, which will place the Central Coast ahead of many Sydney areas.

Reliance encourages preventative healthcare in addition to medical treatments, last month hosting an osteoporosis information evening for early prevention methods and advice for GPs to recognise susceptible patients before the onset of the disease. Reliance will continue to hold further educational events open to the local medical community.

Dr Beckwith states “Reliance has continuously expanded since commencing operations about 5 years ago, and I am encouraged by the overwhelming acceptance of the way Reliance serves the community’’. With plans of opening at least two medical practices a year, Reliance is committed to transforming the healthcare experience for patients with the purpose of creating a new standard for patient experience in primary healthcare.
